Modi and his Masterstrokes :(
It is disheartening how easily anything dubbed as Modi's masterstroke is so easily digested by our masses. The scope and speed with which matters of national security, our independence and our democracy are trivialised through memes and jokes that are forwarded on WhatsApp and social media. It is downright sickening to see the educated and literate people of my country accept and even rejoice such devious "masterstrokes" without as much as giving it some thought.
So this is what I have gathered from the series of dubious “masterstrokes,” which were triggered by constitutional functionaries Shah and Modi in cahoots with the President of India - Ram Nath Kovind, to win in Maharashtra.
Process:
1. The Modi and Shah duo got Kovind to sign on the revocation of President’s rule in Maharashtra at 5.47 am.
This rule can only be removed in case of an ''emergency'' - which can be due to war or because of a severe financial breakdown and economic collapse. India wasn't facing any of the two, so how is the swearing-in of a BJP government with a defector as a partner considered an emergency?
2. Kovind gave his go-ahead and then B.S Koshiyari agreed to the swearing-in at 6.30 am.
The Governor of Maharashtra is the representative of the president of India.
3. Ajit Pawar claimed he 54 elected MLA’s with him and gave a written letter to Koshiyari.
Being the representative of the President - Koshiyari did not question Ajit's claim or got it verified by officials. The office of the governor exists precisely for independently vetting and verifying such claims.
The BJP unleashed uncouth means to carry out a power grab of India’s richest state – Maharashtra, which also sends the second-largest contingent (48) to Parliament. The general process is the Cabinet convenes and passes a resolution, which the President then signs off on. Modi's Cabinet didn't convene as well as did not pass a resolution. Modi simply used our Constitution's “emergency” provisions to send the resolution to the Presiden who obediently signed on.
Clearly the BJP used the serious Enforcement Directorate cases against Ajit Pawar to “persuade” him to join them. But what about our President and Governor - who's supposed to be protecting the Constitution of India? Were Kovind and Koshiyari fit for the purpose?
As per the Constitution will the Supreme Court step in? How or why would it? 3 out of the 5 supreme court judges have been personally appointed by Modi. In early 2016 Narendra Modi decided, without any reason, to sit on the recommendation of the Supreme Court of India to transfer three judges. It has been downhill ever since.
Modi's government is systematically stepping towards a dictatorship, one that would only throw India back 200 years. They first got our free speech (anyone who's anyone who has dissed or criticised Modi has ended up at the wrong side of things. It's scary to put my thoughts out even on Social media out of fear of retaliation), Modi then went after our judiciary system, then took away our secularism, and is now blatantly chipping away our democracy. However, the common man is happy being deluded that this is all a grand masterstroke.
